girona Team News:

real-madrid vs girona Head to Head:

Girona won their first ever game against Real Madrid last season with a 2-1 win in Catalonia. Since then they’ve suffered 6-3 and 4-1 defeats against Los Blancos.

real-madrid vs girona Tip Reason:

Girona caused the shock of the last round by knocking out Atletico Madrid and their reward is a return to the Spanish capital this Thursday. They will be major underdogs again, this time against Real Madrid in what is their first ever Copa del Rey Quarter-Final. This is only the 1st Leg but the visitors will certainly come with belief given what they managed to do at the Wanda Metropolitano last week. A 3-3 draw in the 2nd Leg saw Girona through on away goals and they won’t lack ambition here. Eusebio is doing a decent job of building on Pablo Machin’s success last term. His side were a bit unfortunate to lose 3-2 late on at the weekend against Betis and one of the most encouraging things from their perspective in recent weeks is how other players have started chipping in with goals to relieve the pressure on top scorer Cristhian Stuani. Real Madrid meanwhile saw off Leganes in the last round, principally thanks to a 3-0 1st Leg win. They will take more confidence though from their 2nd Half showing at the weekend against Sevilla. It was one of their most dominant performances of the season against a side that started the match above them in La Liga. Luka Modric really stood up and put in a big performance for his team and Los Blancos will need more of their senior players to do likewise over the coming weeks and months. Overall you have to fancy Real to get the win here. This busy month where many Spanish teams will play 8 matches should ultimately favour the big clubs with larger squads. Girona did brilliantly to reach this stage but they don’t really have the squad to handle two games per week for a sustained period, particularly against the calibre of opponents. By the end of January they will have faced Real and Atletico Madrid twice as well as Barcelona, who they host this weekend. Eusebio will have to prioritise to some extent and he’s likely to rotate a fair bit here given the big Catalan derby coming up. Real Madrid meanwhile had the likes of Marcelo, Isco and Brahim Diaz on the bench at the weekend so clearly there is quality to bring in with Toni Kroos also nearing fitness again. However Santi Solari will also now see the Copa del Rey as an important competition with a league title challenge unlikely and he will be keen to secure a significant 1st Leg advantage. Overall backing Real Madrid -1 Handicap looks good, a bet that has landed in 5 of their last 8 home games despite their well-documented struggles. Backing Real Madrid & Both Teams to Score could also be worth a punt in a fixture that has seen both teams score in all of the previous 3 meetings. All of Girona’s last 6 games have seen both teams score and significantly there’s a good chance Stuani will start here given he was suspended in La Liga at the weekend. That will only add to the prospect of an away goal and Girona aren’t really a side that will park the bus as some visiting teams might in this situation.
