saint-etienne vs lyon Tip Reason:

Lyon won the last clash in November but have fallen off the tracks slightly since then, with just three wins in their last eleven matches. Bruno Génésio’s side just haven’t been able to pick up a run of solid wins, with them getting just one victory in their last five matches; this was against fifth-tier Bourges Foot so not really much of an achievement. They have slipped up against the likes of Strasbourg (1-2) and Reims (1-1) with their last match against 14th place Toulouse being rescued by a late Nabil Fekir free-kick, to make the score 2-2. They haven’t been playing with the same goal-scoring arrogance of last year when they finished 3rd and have seen their defence worsen as a result. They have kept just two clean sheets in their last eleven games, conceding 15 and scoring 18 in that extremely inconsistent period of matches. They have only won one home match since November but will be overjoyed that this match is on the road, where they have a much better record. They are unbeaten in their last nine away games and will hope this can be a key factor as they come up against their rivals sitting pretty in 3rd. Jean-Louis Gasset’s Étienne side have been in fine form this season and are on the search for a fifth consecutive win in all competitions, a victory that would be made all the more sweeter over their rivals. They have scored 18 goals in their last nine league matches, keeping four clean sheets in that time and are currently aiming for a 2nd place finish, with les Verts just one point behind Lille. Wahbi Khazri has been the kingpin of this Étienne side with 12 league goals and one assist after 20 matches. The former Sunderland man has played in a more advanced role to what he’s used to but he has worked so well in an attacking three, alongside Remy Cabella and Lois Diony. The Tunisian scored twice against Marseille in midweek and will be eager for some more against Lyon. This fixture has generally gone in favour of Lyon, with them winning three of the last five clashes but with Étienne currently two points ahead of les Olympiens, could it be a different story this time round? Saint-Étienne have won nine and drawn two of their last eleven home games but Lyon have a pretty solid away record with seven wins and two draws in their last nine matches on the road. Amazingly, only one of the last five clashes have seen both teams score but with these sides in fine form up front, we see a high-scoring fixture on the cards. Eight of Lyon’s last fourteen and five of Étienne’s last seven games have seen over 2.5 goals. Although there are only two points between the teams, we see Étienne as the far superior force at the moment and with four wins on the bounce, they will be raring to go ahead of this match, eager to avenge the 1-0 loss in November. We’re backing a 2-1 victory for Saint-Étienne, with star man Wahbi Khazri amongst the goals.
