stuttgart vs mainz Tip Reason:

Despite defeats in three of the four matches leading up to the winter break, it’d be fair to say that Stuttgart boss Markus Weinzierl has made progress at the club. Weinzierl led the South Germans to three wins across a handful of fixtures before that, enough to see them move out of the relegation zone, and fixtures against Gladbach, Wolfsburg and Schalke wasn’t the easiest way to end the year. Stuttgart will have to continue without French World Cup winner Benjamin Pavard for their first fixture of 2019 due to an ongoing injury. He will join Bayern Munich in the summer. New loan signing Alexander Esswein (from Hertha Berlin) could feature. Mainz’s end to 2018 was a lot smoother, and their win, three draws, and one defeat – to RB Leipzig at that – shows how far they’ve come too. Notably, the 05ers boast the joint fifth-best defence in the division at the halfway stage with only 22 goals conceded and, more importantly going forward, Sandro Schwarz seems to have addressed the “goal problem” that plagued their earlier results. Although Mainz remain one of the lowest scoring sides in the division – they’ve managed just 17 goals in 17 Bundesliga outings – they have scored at least one goal in each of their last nine. Mainz’s more goal focused approach should have an influence on this match, and that’s the angle we’re going for with a bet on ‘Both Teams to Score’ here. Stuttgart have one of the worst defensive records in the Bundesliga – 35 goals conceded, an average of just over two goals per game – but their goal count is also on the rise – a good starter for goals at both ends. Mainz’s attacking form should be enough to find the back of the net against a side that has kept a clean sheet in just 18% of their home outings – French forward Mateta looks a shout to do just that – and a closer look at the visitors’ numbers shows why we fancy Stuttgart for a goal too – Mainz have conceded 11 goals over their last five away days, an average of over two per game. Only Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach have conceded fewer in the league than Mainz though, so you’d have to be optimistic to see Stuttgart getting more than one. But with Mainz having scored more than one in just one of their last eight away days too, we feel that this should be an even enough affair. Mainz haven’t got the best head-to-head record away to Stuttgart, which leans us even more towards the middle, and with neither side looking to have any obvious advantage, we think the most likely outcome is another draw – Mainz have drawn three of their last four too! Our prediction: a 1-1 draw.
