valencia Team News:

Marcelino should opt for a fair degree of continuity after an impressive league display. Rodrigo and Santi Mina should start up top. Centre-back Gabriel Paulista was suspended in La Liga at the weekend but is set to start here.

getafe Team News:

Despite the build of games, Getafe are expected to make few changes to what is quite a settled starting eleven. Jaime Mata may rotate in up top or on the left flank.

valencia vs getafe Head to Head:

Getafe won the 1st Leg 1-0 last week. Valencia have only won 1 of the last 6 meetings in all competitions, although that was in La Liga earlier this term.

valencia vs getafe Tip Reason:

This Tuesday’s clash at the Mestalla is set up nicely with Getafe holding a slender advantage over Valencia heading into this 2nd Leg. A cup semi-final would be a nice bonus for either side but also a potentially damaging one as both sides compete for at least Europa League qualification via the league. A niggly 1st Leg last week in which microphones picked up Valencia boss Marcelino being verbally abused by members of the Getafe bench, ended with a 1-0 home win thanks to a late Jorge Molina goal. The bad blood between the two coaches has the potential to boil over here with a Semi-Final place at stake. Of the two teams it’s Getafe who, last week at least, seemed more motivated to win this tie. They fielded a strong team in the 1st Leg but the heavy schedule will be a test of their fitness levels, particularly given they are a team that works very hard off the ball. They come into this game following another fiery game in which both their centre-backs saw red late on in the 2-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid. Those bans will be for next weekend’s league game though so both Leandro Cabrera and Djene Dakonam, both of whom have been key figures this term, should be available here. Valencia meanwhile were impressive 3-0 winners at the weekend against Villarreal. They sealed back-to-back wins in La Liga with surprising ease against their local rivals at the Mestalla and suddenly they are right in the mix when it comes to European contention. We could see them rotate a bit here but they are likely to be more motivated this week, particularly with Barcelona in real danger of elimination which could open up this whole competition. Overall, Valencia look capable of winning the match, which won’t necessarily guarantee progression with away goals a factor here. They really look to have turned a corner now following a poor first half of the season. In truth their home form has been quite strong for a while though with 7 wins and 2 draws from their last 9 outings at the Mestalla. Getafe have been good travellers this year but the manner of their defeat at the Wanda Metropolitano where they appeared to lose their rag late on will hurt. It’s not a good way for them to come into this game. This will be their 8th game in January and unlike Valencia they don’t really have the strength in depth to cope with such a period and you wonder if this could be one game too many. Overall backing Valencia to Win on the night does appeal. However Getafe are a very well organised side and the hosts will have to work for their chances so there’s every chance this could end up going the distance.
