sunderland Team News:

Lee Cattermole is expected to be Sunderland's only absentee on Tuesday evening.

gillingham Team News:

Gillingham are likely to still be without the services of Billy Bingham and Alex Lacey, though the visitors have few other concerns at present.

sunderland vs gillingham Tip Reason:

Had they turned up in the first half, then Sunderland would’ve probably beaten Accrington on Friday night, such was their second-half performance, though as a result of shooting themselves in the foot for the second game in a row, Jack Ross’ men had to settle for a draw. This home match against a weak Gillingham side is the perfect opportunity for the Black Cats to prove that they’re not going backwards and that they’re very much still in the hunt for automatic promotion. Far too often this season, Sunderland’s performances haven’t been good enough, there can be no getting away from that. At the start of the campaign, the Black Cats were expected to make light work of returning to the Championship, much as Wigan and Blackburn did last season, but they’ve failed to get the right result in winnable games too frequently. Having said that, recent efforts suggest that their intent on ramping things up in the offensive third, which bodes well ahead of a match against a very weak Gillingham rear-guard. Even on their own patch, Sunderland have disappointed this season and often from an attacking point of view, though their last two offensive performances a Stadium of Light have been pleasing. They ought to have scored more than once when recording a pleasing 2.09 expected goals for Blackpool in their penultimate home match, while much of the same can said for when they notched twice and clocked 2.5 expected goals for against Accrington on Friday night. Moreover, the fact that Sunderland took 19 shots in both of those matches, a total that they’d not managed since August, tell us that they know more is needed offensively. Senior player Aiden McGeady said after Friday’s game that he felt Sunderland were due to score four or five against somebody at home. Gillingham can certainly be got at, as Barnsley proved just a fortnight ago, so the Black Cats are unlikely to get a better opportunity to fill their boots in front of goal. Not only do Sunderland’s recent home efforts suggest that they could be on the verge of scoring a hatful, but Gillingham’s recent away efforts point towards them being torn apart at the back. Tuesday’s visitors have shipped at least two goals in three of their last four on the road, while they’ve conceded expected-goals against figures of 1.8 and 2.39 during that time. What’s more, another of the promotion contenders scored four against the Gills recently, as they created chances at will, clocking a massive 5.52 expected goals for. Such numbers don’t bode well for Steve Lovell’s men. There are two bets that stand out ahead of this match. Firstly, ‘Sunderland -1 Handicap’ makes plenty of appeal. The hosts have offered lots more at both ends of the pitch than their defensively weak opponents and thus look a decent bet to cover the handicap in front of their own fans. Secondly, a small punt on ‘Sunderland to Score Over 2.5 Goals’ stands out as a viable option. It’s not been a vintage year for the Black Cats, even at home, but they’ve been performing as though they’re on the verge of handing out a real beating in recent weeks, while Gillingham continue to defend very poorly.
