leverkusen vs freiburg Tip Reason:

2018 was a strange year for Freiburg. Record wins over in-form sides like RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach were contrasted with uninspiring defeats to teams like Dusseldorf and Mainz, often leaving coach Christian Streich scratching his head. He has said before that his side has “lacked aggression and stability at times”, and results such as these confirm his criticisms, and ultimately, Freiburg’s unpredictability. Last weekend’s win over Augsburg was another such result out of nowhere, with the South Germans scoring five in a game (5-1 win) for the first time since first time since September 2012. Like Freiburg, Leverkusen blew hot and cold last year, but new boss Peter Bosz, who was brought in to replace Heiko Herrlich over the winter break, has well and truly turned the dial up to the max. His side won four on the bounce in the Bundesliga, including a 3-1 win over Bayern Munich, before last weekend’s tight 3-2 defeat against former club Borussia Dortmund. Leverkusen still look a force to be reckoned with, though, and their shock exit from the Europa League last week does make their chase for European qualification all that more crucial. Leverkusen have put in much more consistent performances than Freiburg, and that’s the angle we’re going for in this game. Only Borussia Dortmund have scored as many goals in the league than them since returning from the winter break, so you’d have to be really pessimistic to not see them continuing this form against a Frieburg side that have conceded two goals or more in three of their last five on the road, which includes against some of the league’s weaker offenses in Stuttgart and Fortuna Dusseldorf. Youngsters Kai Havertz and Leon Bailey are worth a watch in that regard – the former has scored five in his last seven in the Bundesliga while the former has scored in each of his last two in front of the home fans. Leverkusen do have the joint worst defensive record in the top half, though – 35 goals conceded, an average of just over 1.5 goals per game – so backing them “-1 Asian Handicap” looks the safest way to do so here. Should Leverkusen win by two goals or more, the bet wins, and should they win by just one goal, the bet is refunded. Each of Leverkusen’s last five league wins, however, were by two goals or more, so backing them with a regular handicap is an option for the less risk-averse. Freiburg shouldn’t be too much of a challenge for this free-scoring side, but with the visitors in reasonable scoring form themselves, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to see them on the scoresheet either. Our prediction: 3-1 Bayer Leverkusen.
