sporting vs santa-clara Tip Reason:

Sporting CP sit 4th in the Portuguese Primeira and are 8 points adrift of the top 2 and Champions League football. It’s unlikely they will be able to catch the leaders and so will have to settle for the Europa League if they can win their qualifier. Santa Clara on the other hand are having a great season and sit 8th in the table, however will be looking over their shoulder at this weeks results as they do sit just 8 points above the drop zone despite their healthy ranking in the table. Sporting CP as aforementioned sit 4th in the table and are 3 points behind Braga in 3rd and a huge 10 points clear of the nearest challengers. Europa League football should be all but secure for next season so it allows them a free shot at trying to hunt down the leading duo, although being 8 points behind them they will find that difficult. They are out of the Europa League having lost 2-1 on aggregate to Villarreal and have a cup semi final 2nd leg against Benfica coming up in a few weeks, however they trail 2-1 from the first leg. Santa Clara have been impressive this season in a campaign that sees them sit 8th in the table. They head into this game unbeaten in 4 games after wins against Rio Ave and Nacional and draws against Chaves and Desportivo Aves. This 4 game unbeaten run represents their best form of the season in the league and confidence will be high when they visit Sporting this weekend. Sporting have been excellent at home this season winning 11 of their 13 home games, drawing 1 and losing 1. This puts them top of the home table showing their away form is what’s costing them any shot at the title. Their goal scoring form has also been excellent, scoring on average 2.38 goals per game at home. They are liable to concede the odd goal however, averaging 0.92 goals per game against per game. Sporting will face a stern test this weekend against a Santa Clara side who have impressed away from home. They rank 6th in the away table with 5 wins, 3 draws and 4 losses. They have been tidy in the goals department too, scoring 1.17 per game. What’s been most impressive with Santa Clara is their resilience away from home, they have conceded just 0.92 goals per game away from home and have conceded 2 goals in an away game just three times all season. The stats all point towards a tough evening’s work for the home side however delve deeper into the away sides form and you see they are yet to play Porto and Benfica away from home, although they did only lose 1-0 at Braga a few weeks back. Santa Clara have failed to score in 3 of their last 4 away games and we don’t think they will get on the scoresheet here,
