A struggling St Johnstone side will host St Mirren at McDiarmid Park as they attempt to get back to their winning ways. Who will come out on top? St Johnstone’s dire form continues and the club are now facing the prospect of dropping down into 9th place after a terrible couple of months. The only positive thing for the Saints is that they’re a massive 20 points from dropping into the relegation zone, and just 4 points separates them from the top half of the table. St Johnstone had a fantastic run of games between October and December, and they did not lose a single game. They also ended the year with 2 consecutive wins and started 2019 in the same fashion, but they have failed to win a game since. Moreover, the Saints have only picked up a single point in their 9 games, losing the remaining 8. Granted, 3 of those fixtures were against Celtic in the space of 10 days- once in the Scottish FA Cup and twice in the league, another against Hearts, Rangers and Aberdeen, but Tommy Wright’s side were more than capable of getting some points from those clashes. Despite what the league table might reflect, St Mirren have done relatively well this last month. Oran Kearney’s side still find themselves at the bottom of the Premiership table on 17 points, just 1 behind Dundee and 4 away from Hamilton and safety. The Buddies started their year off in the league as they had ended 2018- with defeats. In fact, their initial 4 games in the league were all defeats, even though they played Celtic, Hibs and Rangers, as well as losing narrowly to Motherwell. The only bright side was the fact they were able to overcome Alloa Athletic in the Scottish FA Cup, although they were knocked out by Championship side Dundee United in the next round. The Paisley club went on to get 2 draws against Aberdeen and Hearts before hosting Livingston and narrowly beating them 1-0 in the final minutes of that game. Their most recent outing saw them get back to their losing ways, as they were defeated by Kilmarnock at home in that Monday fixture. Neither side has been in spectacular form since the start of the year, although it is true that they have each faced quite a few of the top 6 sides on multiple occasions, meaning that it was never going to be an easy run of fixtures for them. St Johnstone will be desperately trying to win and snap out of their bad form, and we believe they could do just that against a weak St Mirren side. We’re backing the Saints to win here, with a final score of 2-1.
