augsburg vs stuttgart Tip Reason:

Augsburg were able to put more distance between themselves and the relegation zone in Frankfurt on Sunday. Under new boss Martin Schmidt, the Bavarians looked a completely different side to the one that lost 3-0 to Nurnberg and 4-0 to Hoffenheim in the games prior, and there were more positives than just the result. Last season’s second top scorer Michael Gregoritsch was able to get his first league goal of 2019 – a confidence booster he needed – while Marco Richter got both his first and second goals of the season in that much needed 3-1 win. Coach Schmidt isn’t expected to tweak his winning formula. Stuttgart are another side hoping to claw themselves away from the relegation zone. Markus Weinzierl’s side have put up a reasonable fight over a tough run of fixtures before this – they drew against Europe-chasing Hoffenheim and almost caused an upset at Borussia Dortmund – but they’re going to need to start getting a few more results if they are to close the six-point gap between themselves and safety. Facing a rejuvenated Augsburg side doesn’t look as good an opportunity as it may have been a few weeks back, though, particularly given their away form (W1 D2 L11). Augsburg are favourites here, but having won just four of their twelve matches so far in 2019, coupled with the fact that they could still be volatile under their new boss, for us, we feel it’s much better to be looking at goals for this game. Both sides’ top-flight matches have seen plenty of them in recent weeks, and those numbers are a good reflection of their year so far. 41 goals have been scored in each of Augsburg and Stuttgart’s matches since the start of January, an average of 3.4 per game, and over the course of the season a bet on ‘over 2.5 goals’ has landed in 79% of Augsburg’s home and 57% of Stuttgart’s away matches too. Another away trip is clearly not good news for Stuttgart all the same, particularly given their track record in Augsburg. Stuttgart have lost four of their six away meetings against their southern neighbours and, as mentioned before, their away record doesn’t show any reason to support why this trend might change on Saturday. The visitors have only managed to keep one clean sheet on the road all season and they’ve also conceded two goals or more in 11 of their 14 away days this term too. Against an Augsburg side that has scored two or more in four of their last five at home, we expect that to continue. Our prediction: 2-1 Augsburg.
