nimes vs rennais Tip Reason:

Rennes led twice at the weekend against Angers before conceding in the 92nd minute to eventually draw, spurning two points that would have brought them up to eighth. They remain in tenth as a result of Jeff Reine-Adélaïde’s late goal. Rennes haven’t actually been on the best run lately with Julien Stéphan’s men looking rather off the pace. They have won just one of their last five matches, with their dramatic victory over Lyon (3-2) in the Coupe de France being the only highlight in a pretty soggy run of results. They now have a cup final to look forward to but Stéphan will definitely be targeting a top eight finish in the meantime. Rennes are very good for scoring goals and attack with purpose, which has brought them 19 goals in their last nine matches. The real problem is their lacklustre defence, which has conceded 14 goals in this time and has been the main roadblock in their progression this year. Their fullbacks are often deployed rather high up the pitch which is great when they’re attacking but this has left the remaining two defenders way too exposed, resulting in a high number of conceded goals. They haven’t kept an away clean sheet against a Ligue 1 side since mid-January and could continue to struggle here as they face a tricky Nîmes side. Nîmes have had a similar problem to Rennes recently as their attack has continued to impress but they have just been too open at the back. The Crocodiles have scored twelve goals in their last seven goals but have also conceded eleven times over this period so they have struggled to progress up the table. They managed to beat Caen 2-0 at the weekend but it was their first win in five matches and was against the league’s second bottom side, so wasn’t an incredible victory. However, Nîmes have a rather solid home record that they’ll hope can help them to the win here. They have lost just twice in their last ten home matches, which is a great record for a newly promoted team. Rennes won 4-0 when these teams last met in December but we doubt it will be as one-sided a match this time as Nîmes are great at home. Both of these sides boast great attacks and terrible defences and as a result we’re backing over 2.5 goals to be scored. This market has won in five of Nîmes last seven games and the same goes for Rennes. Both teams scoring has also been a common trait for these teams as it has been the case in seven of Rennes’ last ten games and five of Nîmes last eight. Rennes have only won one of their last four away games and with Nîmes solid at home, despite their poor run of form, we’re backing a 2-2 draw.
