Fixtures

real-betis vs valencia Tip Reason:

This Sunday’s clash in La Liga is a repeat of the Copa del Rey Semi-Final from a couple of months back. Valencia were 3-2 aggregate winners in that tie but were second best for much of the 1st Leg at the Benito Villamarin. Real Betis will take confidence from that as they look to get their faltering European push back on track. Los Verdiblancos were beaten in an entertaining Seville derby last weekend. They again performed pretty well against their bitter city rivals but the game ended with a first defeat in four matches against Sevilla under Quique Setien. The result left Betis in 9th and they will need a fine end of season run if they are to make the Europa League. Valencia meanwhile are thinking more along the lines of reaching the Champions League. They have two potential ways of doing that. The first is to win the Europa League and they will face Arsenal in the Semi-Finals having comfortably seen off neighbours Villarreal in the last eight on Thursday. They are also still very much involved in the battle for 4th in La Liga so Marcelino will have some decisions to make in terms of which competition to prioritise over the next few weeks. He should go strong here having rested a few players on Thursday night. This should be an interesting game from a tactical perspective, with Betis favouring a possession-based game while Valencia are essentially a counter-attacking side. Los Che won 6-3 on this ground the season before last and an open game looks likely again here. Betis have reached a point where they basically have to take a few risks and try to find a winning streak that could fire them into Europe. They’ve been doing that in recent weeks and that has been a reason why all of their last five games have seen both teams score. They may lack a true predator up top but the likes of Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Canales offer a consistent goal threat from midfield. Valencia are scoring a lot more frequently now than they were in the earlier parts of the season. They’ve netted twice or more in 4 of their last 5 games. They are also in a position where they really need to win, with ground to make up on Sevilla and Getafe and not many games left to do it. Therefore both sides should be quite positive here and backing Both Teams to Score may be the way to go.
