schalke vs hoffenheim Tip Reason:

When they went away to Hannover and returned with all three points a few weeks ago, Schalke would’ve been looking to kick on, though they’ve since moved in the wrong direction. Having failed to win any of their last three, two of which they’ve lost, Saturday’s hosts, who’re now only six points above the drop-zone, need to bounce back. Schalke avoided defeat on the road last time out, though holding an already-relegated Nurnberg side to a draw is nothing to shout about. Not only did Huub Stevens’ men fail to beat bottom-of-the-league opposition, but they played poorly, especially at the back. At Max-Morlock-Stadion, Schalke failed to keep a clean sheet, while the fact that they shipped a worrying 2.15 expected goals for does not bode well ahead of a match against an astute Hoffenheim forward-line. Even at home, Schalke have tended to give too much away of late. They conceded twice against Frankfurt when last at this venue, shipping 2.43 expected goals, while they’ve kept a clean sheet in just one of their six home games since the turn of year. Moreover, they’ve shipped an average of 1.55 expected goals during that time. Not keeping things tight at the back has been a problem for Schalke, though their real problem has been at the other end of the pitch, particularly in front of a home crowd. In 2019, Schalke have scored just three goals in six home games, failing to score on four occasions. An average of 1.14 expected goals for suggests that they ought to have scored a few more, but it doesn’t exactly suggest that Schalke are menacing in terms of creativity. While Schalke have struggled (at both ends of the pitch) on their own patch, Hoffenheim have looked good going forward on their travels. In their most recent away match, Julian Nagelsmann’s men notched four away at Augsburg, while they’ve scored in each of their six away matches since the turn of year, notching a pleasing total of 15 goals. What’s more, they’ve averaged an impressive 1.84 expected goals for during that time. Having scored goals away against the likes of Dortmund, Frankfurt and Leipzig in recent times, Saturday’s visitors will certainly fancy themselves to do some damage at Veltins Arena, though they may not do so without encountering defensive problems of their own. For all they’ve looked very good going forward, Hoffenheim have struggled to keep teams at bay on the road. They’ve conceded in all but one of their five travelling matches in 2019, while they’ve conceded an average of 1.67 goals and an average of 1.82 expected goals during that time. Such numbers don’t exactly bode well, even if they’re up against a Schalke side that struggled offensively. Given the numbers above, it’s very tough to feel that ‘Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score’ isn’t generously priced at present. Schalke haven’t been great going forward, but they won’t go without chances against a very open, attack-minded Hoffenheim outfit, that’s for sure. With the visitors averaging 1.84 expected goals for and 1.82 against on the road, backing both teams to profit offensively in a high-scoring encounter makes plenty of sense.
