stuttgart vs nurnberg Tip Reason:

Stuttgart’s 3-0 defeat in Frankfurt last weekend saw them remain in 16th place. Markus Weinzierl’s side have put up a reasonable fight over a tough run of three fixtures – they drew against Europe-chasing Hoffenheim and almost caused an upset at Borussia Dortmund – but they’re going to need to start getting a few more results if they are to close the five-point gap between themselves and safety. Hosting second-bottom Nurnberg looks a reasonable opportunity to kick that off and Stuttgart will no doubt take confidence from their recent enough 5-1 thumping of fellow relegation fighters Hannover 96. Nurnberg’s last meeting with Stuttgart ended in a 2-0 defeat, and not a lot has changed since then. Der Club have won just one of their last 21 matches (W1 D5 L15) – that being last weekend’s 3-0 win at home to Augsburg – and what’s worse is that they’ve taken just two points away from home this season (D2 L11). Survival has always been the target, but that looks a tougher ask than ever. Even star midfielder Hanno Behrens – their top scorer in their 17/18 promotion-winning season – is yet to be the answer since his return from injury and they have just seven matches to make up a nine-point deficit. Stuttgart are the odds on favourites here despite being one of just three sides to have won just a single game or fewer so far in the new year, so for us, it’s much better to be looking at goals for this game. Only Bayern Munich have seen more goals than Stuttgart in their league matches so far in 2019 (38 – an average of 3.8 per game) and all but two of these ten games saw both teams score as well (80%). Nurnberg, though not the most prolific scorers, are averaging a goal per game over their last five outings, so should have a reasonable chance of finding the back of the net against a Stuttgart side with just a 15% clean sheet rate at home. One might think that another away trip is bad news for Nurnberg all the same, and you’d be right if you look at their track record against the hosts – Der Club have lost in 19 of the 33 prior meetings in Stuttgart. Nurnberg’s poor away record in the top flight stretches all the way back to 2014 – they haven’t kept a clean sheet in 19 consecutive Bundesliga away matches, 17 of which they have lost (D2 L17) – and Stuttgart’s own lack of home wins this year has to be taken with a pinch of salt too – two of their five opponents have been RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim. As such, you’d have to like them to come out on top. Our prediction: 2-1 Stuttgart.
