villarreal vs leganes Tip Reason:

This Sunday’s clash at the Ceramica sees one side who were expected to struggle visit one that wasn’t but it’s Villarreal who are in the thick of the relegation scrap heading into the game. Heading into the weekend with only a two point cushion on the drop-zone, a pivotal week awaits the Yellow Submarine with Leganes their first test. If they can win this, they’ll start to look well on the road to safety with a few more winnable games to come. Villarreal have surprised many by taking their Europa League run pretty seriously, despite their perilous league position. However they appeared to finally give up on that approach by resting a host of key men for the 2nd Leg of their Quarter-Final at Valencia on Thursday night. Leganes meanwhile have already passed the magic 40 point figure and are on course for their best ever league finish. They are unbeaten in 4 games heading into this one and managed to hold neighbours Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw on Monday night. They don’t have a huge amount to be motivated by here though, besides the desire to finish as high as possible having ended up in 17th in each of their previous two top flight seasons. We are getting to the point in the season where teams with something to play for tend to beat mid-table sides. For one reason or another, that’s especially prevalent in Spain and Villarreal will back themselves to get the job done here. They can bring in the likes of Pablo Fornals, Santi Cazorla and Samuel Chukwueze and with that kind of quality, it’s a wonder quite how they are 8 points behind a Leganes side with no star players. Villarreal’s league form has picked up since the return of Javi Calleja with 4 wins from their last 9. They’d been conceding a host of silly late goals to cost them points but a 1-0 win at Girona last weekend where they defended a lead for over 80 minutes will have done their defensive confidence the world of good. Leganes are a well-organised side but most of their success this term has come at home. They’ve lost 56% of their away league games and that figure could increase here against an improving Villarreal. Overall backing a Home Win may be the way to go, with Villarreal’s extra class in midfield likely to be telling over 90 minutes.
