aston-villa vs west-brom Tip Reason:

Until their final day defeat at home to Norwich, Aston Villa looked like the form side in the playoff chase. Will that loss kick off a tough finish to the season for Dean Smith and his side? They built up some impressive momentum to make the top six, so will they be able to pick themselves up after losing to the champions? Villa host Midlands rivals West Brom in this clash, so they’ll be expected to bounce back with a result here. With a tricky visit to the Hawthorns to come, Smith’s side could use a first-leg advantage. Aston Villa emerged from mid-table and stitched together a 10-game winning run. That pushed them into fifth, while they weren’t too far off West Brom in the end. They did lose 2-0 at home to West Brom back in February, but that came when Jack Grealish was missing due to injury. With him back in the side Villa have gone to another level. He returned to kick-start their winning streak, which tailed off just as they met two of the top three with their top six place secure. West Brom come into the playoffs with little fanfare, after not getting involved in the top two fight. They were comfortably clear in the playoffs, but are they going to make a speedy return to the top flight? Caretaker boss James Shan has a lot to prove, while he hasn’t exactly had a stellar time in charge of the Baggies. They suffered a third defeat under their interim boss last weekend, going down 3-1 to Derby, despite sticking with a strong side for that clash. While they might have had one eye on the playoffs, that defeat isn’t a great sign. That loss was a third in four away trips for the Baggies. Their away record was strong under Moore, but they haven’t been able to match that under their new boss, which is an obvious concern ahead of a visit to Villa Park. The hosts may have just lost to Norwich, but they’ve won five of their last six at home. Their loss to West Brom here feels like it came under an entirely different side, given how Villa have played since. In their six games since that loss, Villa have scored 13 goals. They finished up with 53 goals in 23 home games this season, while they should be able to add to that against West Brom. Since the start of March, West Brom have conceded three goals at Derby and Bristol City, along with a 4-0 loss at Leeds. They don’t seem cut out to take on the very best, so we’re going with Villa in this clash. It’s hard to back against the hosts with their form, while West Brom’s away troubles make the Villains seem like good value to secure a first leg victory.
