rennais vs monaco Tip Reason:

Rennes fought back from two goals down to beat PSG in the Coupe de France final on Saturday, a trophy no one expected them to win as they faced the holders of the trophy. It was a steely performance from Rennes though and another typical of the side that Julian Stéphan has been slowly putting together since he joined in December. The young coach has brought a wealth of attacking brilliance to this side, with Hatem Ben Arfa in the form of his life under the Frenchman. They still sit just 11th in the table but Rennes are definitely setting themselves up for an exciting season next year, especially with Europa League football. Despite the cup win, Rennes actually haven’t been in the finest vein of form with no wins in their last six league games. They have scored six goals in their last four league games but have picked up just two points in this time. They have also won just one of their last four home games, which doesn’t set them up with much confidence for this game, they will hope that the cup win can be a turning point for them though. Despite the stature and budget of the club, Monaco are still very much embroiled in a relegation dogfight, with them only three points above Caen who currently occupy the relegation play-off place. Monaco haven’t won any of their last four games and have scored just twice in this time, with relegation rivals Caen (0-1) and Guingamp (1-1) taking points off of les Monegasques in this time, which isn’t ideal for Leonardo Jardim’s men. They lost last week to PSG (1-3) which was expected but with a rather tricky run-in consisting of Saint-Étienne, Nîmes and Nice all still to come after this Rennes match, Monaco need to be on top of their game. Monaco have won just one of their last eight away matches, conceding 13 goals along the way. Just one of their last five away have ended in defeat though, which may give les Monegasques a boost as they face a team they most recently beat on penalties in January. Neither side have been all that good recently and haven’t been playing with a lot of confidence. However, Rennes’ cup win at the weekend should be a catalyst for the team, so we’re expecting them to put in a better result than they have been recently. Monaco are winless in their last four matches and seem to be drifting towards the relegation zone. They have been okay on their travels recently but Rennes should have the wind in their sails for this one so we’re backing a 2-1 home victory.
