augsburg vs union-berlin Tip Reason:

Augsburg’s start to the season couldn’t have been better, with Florian Niederlechner taking just 31 seconds to put them in front against last year’s runners-up, Borussia Dortmund. From there, however, it was a day to forget at Signal Iduna Park for Martin Schmidt’s men as they slumped to a 5-1 defeat. Augsburg could be looking at another season down the bottom end of the table if that was anything to go off. Their defence has at least been strengthened by new signings Tin Jedvaj – on-loan from Bayer Leverkusen – and former Arsenal man Stephan Lichtsteiner over the past few days – the transfer window is still open in Germany. At the other end of the pitch, last season’s top scorer Alfred Finnbogason has resumed full training, and should at least be a part of the squad at the WWK Arena on Saturday. Union Berlin’s emotional Bundesliga debut ultimately ended in disappointment on Sunday as Urs Fischer’s men were humbled 4-0 at home by title hopefuls RB Leipzig. Expected goals totals (xG 0.78 vs 3.93) show that is wasn’t undeserved, but the result shouldn’t have dampened their spirits given the strength of their opposition. Former Dortmund centre-back Neven Subotic might be brought into the starting XI to provide some defensive stability, while fellow new boy Anthony Ujah will be looking for his first start after appearing off the bench last weekend. Will it be him, Sebastian Andersson, Marcus Ingvarsten, or someone else who scores the club’s first-ever Bundesliga goal? And goals are something that we have come to expect from games at the WWK Arena. 76% of Augsburg’s matches there last season saw goals at both ends, which aligns nicely with a visit from Union Berlin this weekend. ‘Both teams to score’ was a winning bet in 71% of their away days last season too. Notably, both sides played tough opposition in the opening game, and both conceded a fair few goals – in fact, Augsburg and Union Berlin sit in the bottom two due to goal difference – so there’s no doubt in our mind that these defences are susceptible. Hence, expecting promising attacks to get a goal each isn’t too much of a reach. In terms of a result, Augsburg have never won their first Bundesliga home match of the season, and looking back to last season, they’re without a win in five (D1 L4). Union Berlin were a particularly stubborn side in their promotion-winning campaign too, losing just five games all season, so we also like the price on them to take something away from this game. Our prediction: 1-1 draw.
