freiburg vs koln Tip Reason:

Freiburg will be thrilled to have won their first two Bundesliga outings of the season, following up an opening victory over Mainz with a win from behind against Paderborn. No doubt they’ll also be happy to see that Cologne are their opponents this weekend – Sandro Schwarz’s men are undefeated at home in their last 13 competitive games against them (W9 D4). It was forward Nils Petersen, who scored his first of the season against Paderborn last weekend, who helped the most to contribute to their dominance over Cologne when the two sides last met in the 2017/18 season. He scored five goals over two dramatic 4-3 and 3-2 wins against them, so they should be wary of him up front alongside Gian-Luca Waldschmidt, who has scored in his last three Bundesliga outings. Cologne’s last meeting with Freiburg sealed their relegation, and the Bundesliga 2 champions will need to start picking up points soon to ensure they don’t face another battle down the bottom this time around. Their performances in their defeats to Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund do give cause for optimism, however. Veteran forward Simon Terrode (29 goals in 33 appearances in 18/19) has featured off the bench for Cologne in both games so far, scoring the consolation goal in their opening 2-1 defeat, and should be set to start alongside proven Bundesliga goalscorer Anthony Modeste after newly signed Jhon Cordoba went off injured last weekend. Freiburg go into the game as favourites, but there is one further stat that sticks out for betting on this game: only four sides had a home record with a higher ‘both teams to score’ rate than Freiburg (71%) last season, and a bet on goals at both ends would have landed in all but 3 of their last 14 home outings too – two of these ‘blanks’ were against RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich. Cologne are yet to blank in either of their matches so far, both of which were defeats, finding the net against top-six finishers Wolfsburg and runners up Dortmund – these were deserved goals too if expected goals (xG) is anything to go by. As such, it’s not too much of a reason to think that they will be able to bag themselves a goal away to an over-performing Freiburg side, especially considering their attacking options. Freiburg do have a stellar track record against Cologne and they are a typical home strong side – proportionally speaking, no side has earned more of their points at home than Freiburg since they were promoted in 16/17 (69% – 87 of 126). Cologne have lost each of their last six Bundesliga away games too, and with Freiburg scoring 22 goals over the nine home games so far in 2019, an average of around two per game, we like them to come out ahead. Our prediction: 2-1 Freiburg.
