sporting Team News:

Rodrigo Battaglia is sidelined for the hosts, while Stefan Ristovski is another who is ruled out for this weekend.

braga Team News:

Braga had the luxury of resting both Fransérgio and Nuno Sequeira ahead of this weekend, so they should both come back fresh for this trip.

sporting vs braga Tip Reason:

While they managed to hang onto Bruno Fernandes, it hasn’t been a great summer for Sporting. They seemingly wanted someone to come in with huge money for their star man, but there were no suitors willing to meet Sporting’s asking price. With the majority of the interest coming from the Premier League, it seems like Fernandes is set for the season. Sporting need that to drive them forward now, but they have made a poor start to the season which could well open the door for Braga to get something here. The hosts were held to a 1-1 draw by Maritimo in their opener, a result which brought their season to a sluggish start. That was a marked improvement from the 5-0 hammering they received against rivals Benfica in the Super Cup. That loss was humiliating for Sporting, which branched off into a crisis which has engulfed their early-season form. A summer too focused on Fernandes is being blamed, but can the Lions come out the other side with a positive result this weekend? Braga will head into this game sensing an opportunity. They were beaten in five of six meetings with the top three last season – including all three trips – but they might fancy themselves to change that here. They are in fine form, with their opening weekend win over Moreirense coming sandwiched between two Europa League victories. They saw off Brondby home and away for a 7-3 aggregate win which takes them into the playoff round. With high scoring form like that, this could be another tough clash for Sporting. Defensively Sporting have been lacking for a while now, having failed to keep a clean sheet across their last 11 matches in all competitions. They have seen both teams score in 10 of those, which shows that there’s no issue going forward. The problems come at the back for Sporting, which is a worry given that Braga have scored eight times in their last six visits to this ground. We think the high scoring visitors will add to their good start here with a goal. Braga failed to keep a clean sheet at the top eight last season, but with a strong record at the other end they should make up for that against a struggling Sporting outfit. We think that both teams to score is the best bet in this clash, so we’re going with BTTS alongside a 1-1 draw between these two Champions League hopefuls.
