wolfsburg vs koln Tip Reason:

Wolfsburg finished last term in good form and with a massive 8-1 win over Augsburg. Under new coach Oliver Glasner, they recently claimed an impressive 8-1 pre-season victory over French Ligue 1 side Nice. A sign of good things to come? Glasner will be banking on star striker Wout Weghorst to make this happen – he scored 17 Bundesliga goals in his maiden year in Germany. New signings Xaver Schlager and Joao Victor and on-loan Man City forward Lukas Nmecha will be supporting him in that role. Cologne are another side with a new manager. Achim Beierlorzer, who managed RB Leipzig as interim manager back in 2015 and Jahn Regensburg more recently, is the man tasked with ensuring their survival. Facing top six finishers Wolfsburg is not the ideal opening fixture. Fortunately for him, his midfield and defence has been boosted by summer reinforcements, but it may be their forwards which will concern Wolfsburg the most. Cologne boast three proven Bundesliga goalscorers in Simon Terodde, Anthony Modeste and Jhon Cordoba. Despite this, we feel backing the hosts to get the win looks reasonable. Wolfsburg haven’t seen too many changes at their camp over the summer and they ended last season with wins in four of their last five at the Volkswagen Arena. Notably, three of these wins came against promoted sides from the prior two seasons, which shows the Wolves know how to make the most of their favourable fixtures. That’s not to say that we won’t see Cologne get on the score-sheet. As mentioned before, they have some good forwards and Wolfsburg did concede in all of their last eleven games of the 18/19 campaign – both teams scored in 65% of Wolfsburg’s home games overall last season too. However, our concerns about Cologne’s defense are greater after their showing last weekend in the DFB Pokal. Cologne’s track record in Wolfsburg is also very poor. Cologne have taken just one win away from the Volkswagen Arena since 2001 (W1 D4 L8), and the Wolves have averaged two goals per game scored against them in the Bundesliga too. So with Wolfsburg scoring with ease in pre-season, we like them to win this comfortably. Our prediction: 3-1 Wolfsburg.
