tottenham vs southampton Tip Reason:

With just one win in seven matches and an embarrassing Carabaao Cup exit to Colchester United to absorb, talk of crisis is abound at Tottenham Hotspur at the moment. In truth, Tottenham’s patchy and underwhelming form can be traced all the way back to the beginning of 2019, and despite their heroic run to last year’s Champions League Final, Spurs’ overall downward curve has been steep. Their results record of 16 wins, five draws and 16 defeats from 37 games since January 1st borders on dreadful, and there are rumours surfacing that suggest that Mauricio Pochettino’s relationship with his players has become strained. Spurs have an opportunity to lift some of the gloom this weekend against a Southampton team they have beaten in seven of their last eight Premier League home games against however. After a slow start to the campaign, The Saints had played themselves into form between late August and early September, winning three and drawing one of four games before their hugely disappointing 1-3 reverse at home to Bournemouth in their last Premier League outing. The Saints registered 30 attempts on goal to the Cherries’ six that evening, and that coupled with the four goals they scored in their mid-week cup derby at Portsmouth highlights the attacking threat Southampton carry at present. In fact, Southampton’s 0-3 opening day defeat to Burnley remains the only competitive game this season where the Saints failed to register, and Ralph Hasenhüttl will expect his team to score again this weekend against a Spurs’ side that had kept just two clean sheets in eight fixtures since the summer. Remarkably, Southampton managed to get on the scoresheet in 100% of their last seven meetings with Tottenham, though Spurs hit the net at the other end in each of those contests too. It’s in that both teams to score market that we feel the best value lies for Saturday’s game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spurs and Southampton have picked up just three clean sheets between them in a combined twelve Premier League fixtures so far this season, and with both defences continuing to look leaky, backing each rearguard to concede on Saturday looks a smart move. Tottenham’s excellent Premier League home record against Southampton cannot be discounted however, and after their miserable Carabao Cup elimination in mid-week, Spurs will be out to prove a point on Saturday. With those factors considered, we’re backing them to take out their frustrations against a Saints side they have conquered seven times in eight attempts at home. Tottenham scored three or more goals in each of their last two home win against Southampton and we’re tipping them to repeat the trick this weekend with a 3-1 win.
