werder-bremen vs augsburg Tip Reason:

Werder Bremen are searching for their first points of the 19/20 campaign, having lost 3-1 at home to Fortuna Dusseldorf on the opening weekend before losing 3-2 away to Hoffenheim on Saturday. These result could be called “underserved” when taking into account the expected goals (xG) totals of 2.01 vs 1.02 and 1.05 vs 0.84 for those games respectively. Coach Florian Kohfeldt had even more bad luck last week when forward Milot Rashica, who has scored four goals over his last five appearances for club and country, was ruled out for the foreseeable future with an injury. Hence, it wasn’t good timing for striker Johannes Eggestein to get himself sent off last game either. Fortunately, his record against Augsburg reads three games played and three won, with an average of 3.3 goals scored per game. Augsburg’s start to the season hasn’t been much better. A promising start in Dortmund, where Florian Niederlechner put them 1-0 up within the opening minute, ultimately became a day to forget, as Martin Schmidt’s men were beaten 5-1. And if last weekend’s performance at home to Union Berlin was anything to go by, his side could be looking at another season battling down the bottom. Augsburg’s defense has been strengthened by new signings Tin Jedvaj – on-loan from Bayer Leverkusen – and former Arsenal man Stephan Lichtsteiner over the past week or so – the transfer window is still open in Germany, but this might not be enough – only six teams have seen more shots on target against them than Augsburg. At the other end of the pitch, last season’s top scorer Alfred Finnbogason has resumed full training, so should at least be a part of the squad on Sunday. Goals are something that we have come to expect from games at the Weser-Stadion – both teams have scored in all but one of the last 14 Bundesliga matches there, after all – and this clash between Werder and Augsburg doesn’t look to be set up much different. Neither side has failed to score in any of their games so far this season, and neither has kept a clean sheet either. Notably, only Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen have seen more goals in their Bundesliga games so far than Werder Bremen or Augsburg, and this fixture has been one worth tuning in for over the years. There hasn’t been a draw in any of the last 14 meetings between Werder Bremen and Augsburg since 2012, with over 2.5 goals scored in 12 of these (85%). In terms of a result, Bremen might have lost their first two games, but their 43 shots on goal so far is a league-high, 5 more than leaders Dortmund have managed, so we feel they should have plenty of opportunities to convert against their opponent’s vulnerable back-line. Augsburg have conceded three goals or more in five of their last eight away games too, which also shows they’re not a good travelling side, so we’re backing Werder Bremen to win 3-1 on Sunday.
