newcastle vs southampton Tip Reason:

Newcastle are unbeaten at home in the Premier League since their opening day defeat to Arsenal. Southampton, despite their precarious position in the Premier League table, have only lost three of their seven away games this season. Newcastle have scored an average of 1.0 goals per game at home this season, while Southampton have managed 1.14 goals per game on the road. Bruce defying the critics at St James’ Park Newcastle United started the festive season off with a bang on Thursday night as they ended Sheffield United’s lengthy unbeaten run in the Premier League, although their 2-0 victory was somewhat overshadowed by yet more VAR controversy. This time, it was the officials that came under fire, rather than the technology itself, although Newcastle won’t mind one bit. This victory lifts Newcastle up to a respectable looking 11th place in the Premier League, and with matches against Southampton, Burnley, Crystal Palace and Everton in December there is a realistic chance that they could enter the new year in the top half of the table. It’s safe to say that the summer appointment of Steve Bruce wasn’t overwhelmingly popular at St James’ Park, and it’s been far from plain sailing for the boss. However, the goalscoring problems that plagued them last season finally seem to be abating, and they head into a busy December period in high spirits after losing just two of their last eight league games. Recent success eases pressure on Hasenhuttl Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl hasn’t had an easy ride of it either, but just like their opponents he heads into a crucial run of games on a high point. They have beaten both Watford and Norwich in the past week to lift them out of the Premier League drop zone, easing the pressure on the Austrian’s shoulders. Both of these victories came at St Mary’s Stadium, and while their away record doesn’t look as good there are still some positives. They have only lost three of their seven Premier League away days this season, and that includes recent clashes with Spurs, Wolves, Manchester City and Arsenal. St James’ Park set for closely fought affair The Saints have managed to score in each of their last six trips away as well, although have kept just two clean sheets on the road this season. On Sunday they face a Newcastle side that have only kept two clean sheets from seven home games this term, so Hasenhuttl will be confident that his team can find the net. However, the goalscoring woes that have plagued Newcastle in recent years have improved. They have netted 11 goals in their last six league matches, and at home they have scored in each of their last four. All things considered, backing Both Teams to Score looks a promising option for Sunday’s match. As we’ve mentioned, both Newcastle and Southampton are making themselves difficult to beat at the moment. Newcastle are unbeaten at home since the opening weekend of the season, while Southampton have only lost three away games despite their difficult run of fixtures. However, four of The Magpies’ home matches have ended all square, and with both sides averaging around one goal per game in their respective home and away matches we think a 1-1 correct score prediction is the way to go.
