watford vs aston-villa Tip Reason:

Watford and Aston Villa have the joint 3rd worst defensive record in the Premier League this season with 33 goals conceded. Aston Villa have lost seven of their nine Premier League away games, but have scored in six of these nine. Villa have conceded 2.11 goals per away game this season, scoring 1.33 per game at the other end. Seven of Aston Villa’s nine top flight away games have seen at least three goals scored this season. Watford’s great escape gathers steam under Pearson Watford’s far-flung hopes of a famous great escape received another boost on Boxing Day as they took a point away from Bramall Lane. A 1-1 draw away to Sheffield United may not seem like much of a confidence boost, but it saw them finally move off the bottom of the Premier League and to within six points of safety. The Hornets’ problems this season have been wide ranging, but it looks like it’s third time lucky for them with Nigel Pearson. He is their third manager already this season, and in their four games since he took charge they have taken five points – 38% of their total points this term. That being said, there is a very long way to go for Watford. However, their win against Manchester United last weekend ended a run of 12 Premier League home games without a win and will have instilled a new sense of confidence in the squad. Saturday marks the perfect opportunity to build on the newfound optimism. Aston Villa within touching distance of the safe zone Aston Villa also received a Boxing Day boost as they beat relegation rivals Norwich 1-0 at Villa Park, taking them to within a point of safety while also giving Watford a helping hand to move off the bottom. It was hardly a scintillating performance from the Villains though, and the fact that it ended a four match losing streak indicates that they still have a lot of work on their hands if they are to clinch survival this term. They have picked up just seven points from the last 30 available, and six of those points have come at Villa Park. Defensive problems mar Aston Villa’s campaign Undoubtedly, their main issue is at the back. Aston Villa have the joint third worst defensive record in the league (alongside Watford) and have shipped 2.11 goals per game away from home. Watford have been slightly better at the back in front of their own fans this season, but have still conceded 1.44 goals per game on average. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the result has been plenty of high scoring games for both sides. Watford have seen five of their nine home games this season end with at least three goals, while only two of Aston Villa’s nine trips away have yielded fewer than three goals. This makes backing Over 2.5 Goals look a promising option on Saturday. Villa’s away record will give the Watford support even more hope. They have lost seven of their nine trips away this season, and while they have scored in all but three of these games we think Watford can get the better of them. The Hornets have shown remarkable improvement over the last few weeks, so with Villa conceding 2.11 goals per away game we think a 2-1 win for the hosts is a good choice.
