Asian Handicap

What is Asian handicap?

A Handicap has two basic properties: it eliminates the draw from the possible outcomes and it gives the underdog a head start, thus balancing the game.

Asian Handicap is a particular type of handicap that offers a wide range of possibilities to the player and also better control than the good-old “fixed odds” way of betting. It`s no wonder that its popularity has grown significantly world-wide in the last few years after its appearance in, take a guess … Asia!

The purpose of this guide is to explain in a simple and concise manner the particularities of the Asian Handicap. We believe that the best representation is through an example and this is what we will do here. Below there are the Asian Handicap lines and all the possible bets and outcomes for an imaginary game between Real Madrid and Getafe. So, how does Asian Handicap work?

These are the basic Asian Handicap lines. When a game is very unbalanced, you will see bigger lines, like 2 ¼ or 3 ¾, but the principles are the same. For example, if you have a 0:2 Asian Handicap and you bet on the favorite, they have to win by 3 goals for you to win, if they win by 2 goals you get your money back and so on.

The Asian lines are also used in other sports than football as well as in overs and unders. For example, when you see a -6 line in basketball you know that if the game ends with a fixed 6 point difference your stake will be returned regardless of the side you bet on. The same can be said for an over/under Asian line of 3, or 2,25. You do the math based on the examples above, the principles are the same.
